Brief

To assist in establishing which fire stations in London Fire Emergency Planning Authority’s portfolio could, without major alterations to the building or its fabric, meet the requirements of the following programmes:

London Resilience: Strategic overview of fire station locations throughout London, to pinpoint a fixed number of stations with a maximum response time of fifteen minutes to a major incident and could house new emergency vehicles/equipment.

Privacy for all: Adaptation of fire stations to accommodate the ‘privacy for all’ programme for firefighters of any gender, persuasion, religion, creed or colour.

Approach

With over 100 fire stations to consider and to report in a consistent format, we devised two building and facilities appraisals with a matrix scoring format that could be applied to review each fire station in respect of the two workstreams.

Outcome

The method of appraisal enabled the team to identify which stations could meet both programmes. Upon identification of suitable stations, the brigade commenced deployment of equipment and construction works for each of the respective programmes.
